Bit late yeah. Not a day late. It's the first Friday of the final quarter!
VA - Not Your World Music: Noise in South East Asia (Syrphe)
If your bank of noise recordings is Anglo- or Euro-centric, check out this collection that brings together artists from across South East Asia. Syrphe is a great platform and label that focuses on Asia and Africa, attempting to bring more attention to these often forgotten regions (I'm definitely guilty of that). This release features artists from Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, The Philippines and Myanmar, and covers harsh noise, drone, field recordings and more.
Visible Cloaks - Valve / Valve (Revisited)
You may know Visible Cloaks from their Fairlights, Mallets and Bamboo mixes or perhaps you recall VC member Spencer Doran's guest mix for Bake's Rinse show last year. This is their latest release, their debut on RVNG. It takes spoken word from an old track by Miyako Koda and translates it to MIDI, to stunning effect. Koda also contributes new vocals, giving it a timeless quality, existing on another plane entirely.
liam - untitled
Liam O'Mahony, aka Hold M/C, dropped this sweet freebie this week. It's tagged as ambient but there are beats, albeit quite blissful. 'thank you' and '2' are my highlights.
richardaingram - Valehouse
Manchester's Richard A Ingram got at me with this one. It's a four-track release built from granular synthesis. If you've ever heard and enjoyed the heart-wrenching vignettes of Infinity Frequencies, you'll like these explorations, lengthy abstractions of emotive chords and whirring mechanics.
Antenes & Electric Indigo live at Roulette, Brooklyn, Moving Sounds / Dame Electric Festival 2016
Electric Indigo is the driving force behind female:pressure. Antenes is a performer who's released on LIES. Here they provide 50 minutes of subterranean ambient vibes, dark and murky as befits the season. The first section is Antenes, the second is a cross-fade between the two artists and the final third is from Electric Indigo. Brilliant stuff.
A'Bear - Ear Of The Heart
A heady and euphoric trip inspired by Terry Riley. A'Bear is a London-based artist who plays with vocals and synths, and this is a worthy intro to her work.
Sandra Boss - Perfekt Termisk
This is a year old but I just came across it. It's from a release where the artist recorded sounds from the insides of obsolete media and sound generators — various kinds of reel-to-reel recorders and microphones, that sort of thing. It's chilling and fascinating.
JASSS - EN LA EDAD DE PEDIR PERMISO
Here we have a 20-minute jam from Jasss, a Berlin-based artist who's released on Mannequin, as well as DJing at their OHM parties. It's dank, foggy, mutant techno.
Pechblende - Death of an Amazon
Similarly dark, this ambient trip suits its title. Pechblende is based in Stockholm and has tracks titled things like 'Innocence Lost' and 'Where the Sun Shines and Creates the Deepest and Sharpest Shadows'.
L/F/D/M - UNTITLED (BLUE)
I love the delicate floating synths here, offset by shimmering, scuzzing squawks. The art seems to be a cassette sleeve entitled Under The Eyes of Augustus, which I think is super. Can't wait for the rest of the tape, if and when it comes out.
LJUDVERKET 008 Vesa-Matti Kivioja - Universo EP
This is a cool release on the Ljudverket label from Finland (unintentional Scandinavian slant this week). It's got a few different avenues, from nervous techno, and Basic Channel-style echo to strange tempos and meandering arpeggios. The title track gazes up at the world in horror and wonder.
SoundCloud playlist
Hope you liked the pod. It's probably my favourite one yet.
