I've been watching the new Twin Peaks. One of the best and most chilling things about it is the prevalent use of ambient sound, the gentle hum of the world.
Steve Summers - Artificial Light
Steve Summers knocks out some bangers for Chicago's CLEAR. Synthetic, robotic, mechanical, yet injected with a lumpen groove that's hard to shake. Human.
Dråsa - Rast
A beautiful and heartfelt mixture of soaring vocals and digital and analogue manipulation, performed live at an artists' collective in Finland late last year.
Saintes - Melancholia
Unsettling weird modern folk pop stuff.
Monte Burrows - Skua
This is a cool set of pieces, the first of which ultimately feels like a drone recording augmented by the sound of a passing refuse truck. That is in no way a slight, believe me. The second piece offers the silent release of the truck's absence, tying back into what I said about Twin Peaks above.
SoundCloud playlist
aidan - used to do things, got older (version)
My namesake, cool dude Aidan Wall, made this version of a track by a friend of his, Naomi Credé. It's lovely in its melancholy.
Jadir Zarate - Ancient Echoes EP [FREE DL JUNE 2ND]
Jacktone are just claaaass. Out to Doc Sleep! This release is coming out next week and it's going to be freeeee. I'm sharing it here because I will be away and won't be able to mail it to you! So peep the Jacktone Bandcamp. Jadir Zarate is a Mexican producer who builds synths for his own Hard Mod company, and this release showcases the music he makes on those instruments. Dark and dank electronics, shifting pulses and unresolved tensions abound in these twisted tracks.
DISCWOMAN 24 x Ash Lauryn
Yet another quality DISCWOMAN mix, this time from Ash Lauryn, who recently contributed a mix to my pal Aurora's show. This is a fantastic mix of classics from Lauryn's native Detroit (though she's currently based in Atlanta). It kicks off with 'Knights of The Jaguar' and goes from there really.
Marlene Claudine Radice - Not Long But Suspended
Lovely foggy balmy ambient wash.
maral - track 14 (edit)
A clash of styles, cultures and more. Hefty bass and beats mixed with radio recordings (it seems to me?), rap lyrics and traditional dance. Bangs.
anywayawana - Mixtape 5: Edgware, This Is Edgware - One To Fall Asleep To
Midland's brother here with a superb mix with a single focus. See the title. Some of yer faves, like Radiohead, and Blade Runner samples, all stitched together beautifully.
HNYPOT 229: Jordee's Non-binary Transmission
Another banging Honey Soundsystem mix, this one from SF's Jordee! Throbbing, undulating acid house that gets under your skin and makes you want to SHAKE.
Sage - Life festival 2017 Mix
Another life-affirming mix (pun not intended) from Dublin's Sage, ahead of his set at Life Festival this weekend.
Jubilee Presents Magic City 3
And finally for this week, a free collection of club bangers assembled by Jubilee. Friends and family included, from Orlando and Olive T, as well as luminaries like Ikonika and Untold. It's largely a modern take on classic electro, and they all hit big.
So yeah I'm off on holiday on Sunday, but there's still a Bandcloud radio show on DDR to go out, usual time on Sunday night (8pm Irish time). No mail next week but two weeks from now there's a special guest edition coming from none other than Tony Poland!
