My brain is mush, I've watched countless hours of Peppa Pig lately and thus trying to follow Season 2 of Altered Carbon is a fool's errand. I've been scribbling about books.
Nous'klaer Radio #27 - Philou Louzolo
A solid hour of percussive dance music to get you started.
HOLOVR - Eternal Flow
This was recorded in 2017 and due for release via a number of avenues, none of which came to fruition. HOLOVR decided to throw it out to the world this week, and pledged that any money spent on it will go on more Bandcamp purchases of other people's work. Like a lot of his stuff it's gorgeous, melodic synth music for the soul.
Jake Muir - sampler's delight
What a super mix here. It's ambient but not really? It's all sample-based music, cut up and strung together, taped collage and crispy echoes. Musty and dank at times, open and bright, fascinating throughout.
Lila Tirando a Violeta - 1%
Uruguayan producer Lila Tirando a Violeta shared this collection of tracks made up of demos and singles last week. Some are mournful weirdo pop jams, some rattling club-ready flips (there's an unexpected 'Mad World' refigure in there), each showing a different side to this artist.
Schloss Mirabell - The Opener
Ughhhhh I could listen to this short piece of haunting cello and electronics all day.
Hanging Lichen - "Consumption"
Harsh noise? No. Calming noise. Part field recording, part distorted sample, part recorded speech/interview. Lots going on. Builds to huge heights before flattening to nothing.
Abraham Chavelas - Despertarán Hambrientos los Gigantes
"The Giants will awaken Hungry in mourning, gloom, nostalgia and fury. Insomnia, disturbances of the state of consciousness, anxiety and desire to scream at dawn. Contrast. It is a sigh, a loving smile in the midst of melancholy."
anah - Offerings
Rattling percussive bangers from anah, I believe it's her debut release. Assured and accomplished, it's quite a statement of intent. Here's hoping for more soon.
Madeline Darby - What Is Love?
This is a weird and funky album from New York's Madeline Darby on Tribe Tapes. It's hissy and fuzzy, distorted and disjointed. Lots of short tracks with weird sounds and weird noises and weird effects and just weird whatever.
Dan March - Acid Ambient
Also on Tribe Tapes, this is neither particularly acid nor ambient. Well, the third track features 303 sounds layered uncomfortably atop one another, arrhythmic and awkward. The other tracks are nightmarish and painful, perfect for these UNCERTAIN TIMES.
wonja - Quarantined Mix from 2017
A lovely mix from Wonja, recorded in 2017 but timeless.
VA - Music For Quarantine Vol 1
Lee Kelly, who featured on Missives last year, took the initiative to invite some friends from the Irish scene to contribute tracks for this compilation. It's raising funds for ALONE, an Irish charity that works with older people who are socially isolated (at the best of times), homeless or living in crisis. It's easy to feel glum in the present moment, but it's important to remember that staying inside on your own all day is a reality any people face all the time. There's a gorgeous opener from Ellll, who shows she's not just about intense beats. There are dank field sounds from Rosita Moulin. Kelly himself contributes the aptly titled 'Never-Ending Sunday'. New Members (who's just announced a release on Pear) has a fragrant breaksy number entitled 'Pho-Sho'. Gadget and The Cloud, Moving Still, TR-One all feature as well. Well worth your time and money.
COREY FULLER - Sanctuary
Thanks to Al Sundvall, who shared this one on Twitter. It's a lovely gentle and contemplative piece from Japan-based US artist Corey Fuller. Originally conceived for an installation with Synichi Yamamoto, he's offered it up as a name-your-price download to offer solace to whoever needs it.
Mehdi Bahmad - Rouge À lèvres (Olof Dreijer Remix)
What in the world? As I type this, there's an Olof Dreijer remix in the world and it's got sub-80 plays. It is a madness. It sounds very Olof in that it's bouncy, floral and fun, taking the original track's plaintive vocals and giving them new life.
loscil - Baychimo
A few years ago loscil created an app entitled Adrift that provided "four ambient compositions that use structured random selection to continuously play with no beginning or end". He's now shared one of these as a name-your-price download for people who don't have the app (I had it on my last phone but since I left the land of Apple I can no longer play it), rendered to one hour. It's named 'Baychimo' after a ship that became trapped in pack ice in 1931 and wandered adrift for 30 years.
Arne Banki - Field notes IV: It's always rainy somewhere
Last week I shared the sounds of Hawaii. On the flip side to that, there's something comforting about sitting inside and listening to the sound of the rain. Here are five tracks of rain (and other sounds) recorded in Slovenia and Croatia.
