  • About

Earlier this week it was International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. Speaking with a friend, I asked what I could do to show my support to the community. He suggested that I make all of Bandcloud LGBTQ+ this week. One of my biggest influences has been Busta Rhymes (no, really, trust me). On ‘Pass the Courvoisier Part II’ he says “Don’t talk about it, be about it”, and that’s really been my MO, you know, more important to do the thing than talk about doing the thing. But sometimes things need to be said. If ever it wasn’t clear, I’m fully opposed to any bigotry or hatred against anyone, particularly minorities of any kind. LGBTQ+ people don’t need to prove themselves to you, they deserve your respect and understanding of their humanity as a given. Me showcasing their work won’t change any systemic difficulties they may face either. All I can do is show my love.

That’s my ham-fisted intro out of the way, please enjoy the music. Oh and I’m on radio on Sunday night. 9pm Irish time.

Tati au Miel - The Exorcism of Tania Daniel Remixes

Tati au Miel has gathered a bunch of likeminded artists to rework and refashion their fascinating EP from 2019. In ways it builds upon that release’s power and exploration of self through sound. It featured tracks like ‘the power of being a metal techno slut’ and ‘as someone who truly loves and expresses’. Here we have an extended take of the opening track, ‘At The Centre of My Being’, while Mossing’s take on ‘Surviving’ is particularly arresting, as is Deidre’s version of ‘As Someone Who Truly Loves and Expresses’. The tracks are raw and open, unforgiving and cathartic. Make sure you check out the original EP too. Oh and there’s a new video dropping today too.

deaddilf - Cognitivists and Modifications

First of all, deaddilf?? What a name. I don’t even know what to say about this music. It’s in another world. You think it’s ambient classical (maybe?) and it rumbles into hard dance ballet. Big ol’ modulated riffs à la that rave scene from Blade kick in. Everything ends like a rave in a monastery.

MARICAS - Ariel Zetina Ode to Hex Hector' mix.

Ariel Zetina’s contribution to the MARICAS series is a mix of Hex Hector remixes of rnb and pop songs from the 90s and 00s. While it’s in honour of HH, it features remixes by many others in that vein, from MAW and Ralphi Rosario and Full Intention to Thunderpuss and Freemasons. We’re talking about those “classy” uptempo remixes of the likes of Whitney, Mariah, Britney, Brandy, Janet, Beyoncé etc etc. Purists may scoff, but this is unbridled fun.

Juanita MORE! - The Bitch Wants MORE! - Tequila Gold

A silly fun banger from the 90s, pressed to vinyl and raising money for TRUTH (TRans yoUTH), a joint program between the Transgender Law Center and GSA Network.

borshch mix 27 - authentically plastic

This is tagged as industrial, but it deftly moves between noise, noisy techno, intricate percussive techno sounds from Africa and beyond and a whole world of other sounds.

Slim Soledad - Th1rs7y

This is a seriously dark and sexy banger, with crisp electro sounds offset by a deadpan spoken word vocal. It’s on Bandcamp with some seriously NSFW artwork.

Dyspheric -01-Zvrra

Big-room atmospheric techno from Zvrra. Pulling from a range of genres, she ties it all together brilliantly to create a truly mind-bending mood. I would love to share some new tracks of hers but they seem to be under wraps for now (bar a few cuts in this mix I think).

Citizen Scientist - Tattoo This Tweet on My Butt

Citizen Scientist, an artist based in North Dakota, USA, goes by a number of names. She makes punk as Nora Nygard, she also records as Prairie Goth. As Citizen Scientist, she releases electronic bits every Friday. I could never be that productive! I just write words. A whole new track! I could pick any number of them but I’m sharing this one on account of its delightful title.

Jorianna - Jorianna

This four-track release is no-holds-barred sass, attitude and delight. Real 90s house vibes with sexually charged lyrics to boot. Not much more to say!

Amamelia - WOW!

This album, from New Zealand’s Amamelia, veers between breathy pop and breaks-laden dreamy music. It also dips its toes into classic house territory. Range.

Helena Celle’s Other World - The Sound of Music

It would be trite to say that the music of Helena Celle is weird and wonderful. But that’s just what it is! Weird, wonderful experiments in sound, using strange processes and “aleatory factors” to create eerie and unsettling sound worlds.

Local Selection 130: darkmavis

darkmavis recently featured on Orange Hexagon Son sodarksospicy, his collaboration with sohotsospicy, but he’s just done a solo mix for Four Four. It’s almost overwhelming, racing through hi-nrg trance riffs new and old. At one point he moves from an old Matt Darey Moloko rework (as heard on Pure Euphoria) into some PC Music, and honestly it’s inspired. Not for the faint of heart, the mix just gets wilder as it goes on.

cosmo - Slow Down On The Uptake

In closing, something more gentle. cosmo recorded this in the garden, some improvised strumming accompanied by the birds. Do you remember Alexi Murdoch’s ‘Orange Sky’? This is like that if it was stripped to its bones.
