The first mix of the year comes from New York's DJ Wawa. A DJ and promoter, who's a regular at spots like Bossa Nova Civic Club and Mood Ring, he's been described as "a local fixture", one "who is as generous behind the booth as he is on the dance floor" by The Fader. You can read that interview here. I asked if he had a bio, and this is what I received...
"DJ Wawa doesn’t really exist for long periods in the physical realm. They’re the connection you have with an old friend when you see them on the dance floor and share an embrace. Just long enough to reconnect but short enough to give each other space. They’re the after glow of a set you heard the night before that you can’t get out of your mind and the little voice in your head that tells you to keep on dancing long after you thought you couldn’t stand anymore."
It's a belter of a mix, one that really corresponds with that final sentence above. It moves through some of the most exciting and forward-thinking sounds in house and techno right now from around the globe. There's a huge contingent of brilliant US artists, with special mention going to Ilana Bryne, forthcoming on Naive Trax, as well as the utterly singular RS Produções on Príncipe. Portugal really out here. So get loose and shake a leg to this one.
