Guest mix - James N Murray

It's already mid-March, but here is the delayed second mix of the year.

James N Murray is an artist living and working in Chicago. He's put out a few releases on Jacktone Records, the most recent of which is called City of The Night. Inspired by the 1963 novel of the same name by John Rechy, the album seeks to explore the darkened, forgotten spaces on the edge of society, formerly inhabited by gay men in search of contact of whatever type — social, sexual — with other men. It creates a soundscape for this world, "crumbling away by the time I entered my early 20s, largely lost to the digital realm and lingering impact of the AIDS crisis". The mix for Bandcloud is a companion piece for the album, and it expands beyond its beautiful music choices into film and poetry, to form a rich and expansive step into the spheres that shaped these soundscapes. In Murray's own words...

"This mix is an exploration of the influences behind my last album, City of the Night, on Jacktone Records, as well as materials I'm thinking about as inspirations for current and future work I’ll be doing. I began making this mix by thinking about it sitting to one side of the album, a set of footnotes and references to my music. The mix is a reflection on these works, using poetry, spoken-word, film and music as materials, allowing sampling and collage techniques to create new narratives from the past."
