Guest mix — Sheepshead
Sheepshead Bay is a place in south Brooklyn, named after a particular fish that resides in its waters. That's what the internet says anyway. Mitch Strashnov, a DJ who grew up there and took the place name as his moniker, told me this:
"Builders in the late 1800s were sorting out Coney Island Creek and one of them lost their boot in the Bay. Lo and behold when he yanked his line it was not his boot but the head of a sheep."
Truth? Lies? Who knows? It's a good story. I briefly knew Mitch about seven or eight years ago, but we lost touch. We met again at Unsound in Kraków the one time I went, and we've been friends since. He's not just a DJ (few people are). He throws parties, he writes and he's got a regular radio show/mix series called Newtype Rhythms that he runs in conjunction with Inverted Audio. It's had stellar guests like Photonz, Nautiluss, Hoshina Anniversary, Nazira, Solid Blake, Burnt Friedman and more. It's weekly too, which is really impressive.
The mix he's put together for Bandcloud is percussive, heavy, hypnotic and exhilarating. In his own words: "Just lots of hard drum, funky, some breakstep (yes), some weird Arcola from mid-2000s..." There's even some Blur in there.
