Good morning. Grey skies deaden the mind.
Cong Burn Tapes 02: Amxd - 'Realizables'
New tape from the Cong Burn crew, this one a collab between L. Pearson and Haddon, the latter of course responsible for Auricular Palimpsest, the first Cong Burn release. This preview suggests a more focused work than its predecessor (BC#95), more directly percussive and techno-friendly yet still mind-altering exploratory in nature.
x.y.r. - mental journey to ..
I belatedly discovered this release earlier this week, two months after its release. It's a soothingly beautiful tape collection of gorgeous meandering synth noodles, released on Not Not Fun but given away here by its creator. Swirling, shimmering ideas twist around softly and gently, like a never-ending DNA strand in gif form.
VA - Terminal Dream
x.y.r. also features on this compilation of new Russian music from Moscow's Terminal Dream. The label aims to showcase "lo-fi ambient, drone, experimental, tape music."
Jana Winderen - The Wanderer
I read a piece in The New York Times this week about how the brain responds to music, which mentioned new work from MIT in relation to brain imaging that can analyse the exact effect music can have. "When a musical passage is played, a distinct set of neurons tucked inside a furrow of a listener’s auditory cortex will fire in response. Other sounds, by contrast — a dog barking, a car skidding, a toilet flushing — leave the musical circuits unmoved." What does this mean for those of us who enjoy the sound of field recordings? This release is made up of hydrophone recordings of Zooplankton and Phytoplankton in the North Atlantic, largely amusical but with occasional burrowings of drone. Just to tickle those particular regions of the auditory cortex.
Kib Elektra - Breaking Skies
When Tristan Bath did his guest edition of Bandcloud last year he included a SoundCloud set from Kib Elektra, describing it as "female vocal-led experimental pop, which goes heavy on voice manipulation and deliciously chunky drum machine beats", and exclaiming that it "should get picked up and made massive immediately". So it's no surprise that Breaking Skies is now the first release on his new Bezirk label, which he's running with Daryl Worthington of Beachers. Check it out!
Temple Volant - florès
This might be one track, it might be a set, it's half an hour and it's addictive. It's a slow-burning techno number that builds from nothing and nourneys through dank pathways into hazy passages, patches of light shining through a murky undergrowth.
donato dozzy - BABYLON MARKET MIX VOL.2
Yet another ambient synthy mix, this one from the master Dozzy. Gong Baths, mmm.
Ciarra Black - Live PA @ alone together vol. 7
GNARLY live techno set. Noisy, dirty stuff, recorded somewhere in Brooklyn last week.
Helene C. Simon / female:pressure mix for Byte FM
Thoroughly stomping mix from this MMODEMM affiliate.
Blowing Up The Workshop 55 ◆ De Leon
Honestly can't get enough of this. I've been raving about De Leon for 18 months now, they did a mix for this very project, and now they've contributed the latest entry in the BUTW series. No blurb except for a tweet from Matthew saying "42 min odyssey into gamelan, rhythm & dubwise — extending the work silently formulated on tapes for @au_ght last year". Seriously, hypnotically good.
Evenings and weekends, that's what it's all about.
