I'd planned on completing this and scheduling it before my holiday but of course that didn't happen.
Videobasic - Untitled
Two Italian tape dudes comprise Videobasic. One apparently puts on shows in tents and plays with tapes found in charity shops. The other runs something called Trashsound. This is a weird mix of sci-fi sounds and looped drone, all flittering weirdness and haunting vocals across some 40-odd minutes.
Das Torpedoes - The Russian Submarine
This is a nice piece of scratched ambient tones, foggy loveliness. It's a concept album, inspired by a sunken submarine. There's a nice short piece about it at Tabs Out Tapes (I think that's where I came across it first actually). It's quite lovely yet also riven with fabricated nostalgia and imagined memories.
hole house - welcome the stranger mixtape
This has been sitting in my wishlist for some time. It's quite weird. Apparently it was recorded in an "abandoned VHS rental shop in West Yorkshire." Spoopy. Bits and pieces of strange sounds and clanking terror, buzzing distortion and nightmarish echoes.
Chaines - OST
I tweeted about this late last year but here finally are some proper words. It's a hugely inventive release, merging sounds and styles and taking a broad approach to sound as art. There are gentle melodics, charming whistling, abrasive noise, spoken musings; it's quite abstract and deserves proper attention but it really is quite special.
Honcho Podcast Residents Series 001: Clark Price
This is a really fun mix from Clark Price, resident at Smart Bar's Honcho party. It's got low-key bangers from the likes of Red Axes and Golden Teacher and later moves into headier stuff from people like 2 AM/FM.
Oli - AHT
Here's a bunch of tracks from Oli, a Dublin producer. 'Bored Music' is full of broken beats and wide-bodied synths; 'Lys' is heavy and stabby; 'Seq' is even harsher and features blinding percussion and darting melodies. Interesting stuff from this newcomer.
RAIN TEXT - 1.3 (SKPN004)
This release really grabbed me, I featured one of the tracks from it in the last pod(thanks again Tim). It's strange percussive stuff from another Italian duo, and is really quite hypnotic in its sublime simplicity, without ever being simple.
Tullia Benedicta - Echi
Tullia Benedicta is an Italian producer based in London. She was previously a member of post-rock/shoegaze band Grace, and is now making dark ambient kinda stuff on her own. This trio of tracks blends droning sounds with ultra-deep percussion, shadowy vibes not quite hitting the dance floor but hinting towards weird late-night journeys.
Wednesday (水) – Lynne (Tokyo, Japan)
This was one of five mixes shared by Electronic Explorations as a focus on the Japanese techno scene. Its focus is on deep, dubby techno and autonomic sounds. Not quite fun stuff like Clark Price up above but deserving of your ears for when you're in that zone.
Saturday night eh. Who checks their emails at this time.
