Tempted to just have a blurb about each track on Illmatic but I'll spare you. I might play some rap on radio next week though. We shall see.
Dorisburg & Efraim Kent - Tecken EP
Here we have some sublime, delicate, percussive techno. Three tracks that are minimal in composition yet driving and exhilarating in their execution. These are hefty tracks too, so you're getting your money's worth. I came across this one because I heard snippets of the label's next release, from Neel & natural/ electronic.system., so it's not new new, but quality is quality eh. Affirmed new fan of Tikita right here.
naivetape #5 - Club Fitness
The latest mix in Violet's Naive series comes from Toronto DJ Club Fitness. Sick DJ name. It's a solid mix of crunchy electro, deep techno, breaksy rave/ravey breaks. Serious fun from start to finish. I don't know most of it but there's some Elmo Crumb and Lanark Artefax — I didn't like the Intimidating Stillness mix of 'Touch Absence' for a while but it's growing on me!
. 🌀 passionitis ☁️ . - past [beat tape]
Sweet lil beat tape made over the past few months. Dusty lazy shuffling grooves. I don't usually listen to this kinda stuff but when I do it's good. Four tracks. Maybe in the summer weather I'll listen to more like this so hit me up if you make or come across anything along similar lines!
demongay - Nihilistic Self Operating Malware
If that artist name or release title didn't grab you, then maybe opening track 'Cock Lust' will. It's a dark techno jam laden with gated vocals, driven forth by burning acid. It's all techno that's at turns dusty, hypnotic, haunting but always pounding. demongay is a based in Oakland, home to bundles of talent and creativity; check the SoundCloud for more goodness.
The Memoir - Page 18: Wanderwelle
Wanderwelle released a stunning album on Silent Season last year, and ahead of its follow-up they've put together a mix for The Memoir. This is not a standard dub techno mix, building slowly and gaining pace and tempo. Instead it moves from track to track, idea to idea, ebbing and flowing with its own mind. Sublime. There's a big interview to read too.
Synth Sisters - Euphoria (WAV)
Thanks to Christian Eede for this tip. It comes from Japanese duo Synth Sisters and the name kinda says it all. It's got lots of synths. It's euphoric. If this were a 90s music mag I'd make some joke about not writing any more than that and then (you're paid by the word -.ed). Only it's not a magazine and I'm not paid. This is swirly, gorgeous, nightmarish, dreamlike, evocative. It's amazing. Dig in. Float. Sink. Dive. Fly.
Vanessa Vanjie Mateo - Miss Vanjie (B. Ames Mix)
Vanjie. Miss Vanjie. Miss Vaaaanjie. If those words mean nothing to you, well no worries. Here is a club track in honour of the most memorable exit in recent Drag Raceherstory. Obviously it's a novelty track but it BANGS. It's from Houston producer/DJ/queen B. Ames, who's worked with DJ MikeQ's Qween Beat and remixed queens from the show after hearing tracks like this one.
Many HausMo Artists - HausMo Mixtape I
It's 4/20! I don't actually care, but this release is out today. Congrats to Hausu Mountain on five years of weirdness. They celebrate with this tape, showcasing 80 minutes of music from 22 different artists (though I'm sure within those 22 acts there's personnel crossover #pedantdad). I love the 80s sheen of D/A/D's 'Orion Beach'; the incredible jumpiness of TALsounds' 'I Am Why'; the manic excitement of Khaki Blazer's 'Vibrato Rap'... It's all an insight into the breadth of talent on this excellent label. Blaze it!
Had an interesting discussion on Twitter yday about the lack of a space for proper discussion about music. I'm always dying to hear your thoughts on what you like (and just as importantly, what you don't like) in these missives. So if you ever feel the urge to hit reply, act on it! Please!
