I'm at a conference so this will be brief.
Beta Librae - Sanguine Bond
Did I include a Beta Librae set recently? Yes. Am I featuring her again? Yes. This is her debut album, and it comes on New York label Incensio. I have nothing to add really except that it's dope! I could vibe off 'Just Drift' forever. Peep the blurb, it really says it all: "An extremely singular ambi-tech-no-house album, encompassing all the deepest vibes of the rave — warm and fuzzy afterglow dub mixes, emo-ambient ‘ludes, yogic, tribal downtempo vibes and all, mixed with love by the one and only!"
Investigations of a Dog - Kafka Architecture EP
This act is named after a Kafka short story told from the point of view of a dog. I like the sound of that. This EP is named after the writer. The first track is a noisy barrage of sounds, from groaning vocal synths to plucked strings and a hypnotic, lilting percussion line. The second is much more intense, a half-time beat riding under electronica-infused chords and synths.
VA - All Of Us Are Medicated (Slow Clinic)
This is a brilliant collection of tracks built around dank noisy sonics and spoken word, not in a poetic sense but just an open expression of thought. The opening track talks about moments of realisation as far as the mortality of our loved ones, and the protective bandage that music can provide to our personal wounds. Others concern food, personal ambition, social media and more. All proceeds go towards the Mental Health Foundation in the UK, which supported the project.
XX Files Radio Mix 012 for n10.as - BASTARD GIRL UTOPIA
"Violence power and protest, showcasing the raw skills of the unheard." That's the MO for Bastard Girl Utopia, an international collective and digital label. This mix for XX Files features music from its members Charlotte De Sicaa, tch and Emily Glass as well as shining lights cocoon egg and Terribilis and heroes Chubby Wolf (RIP) and Grouper. It's a deep, gorgeous body of drone and noise that soothes and jolts in equal measure.
STM 256 - Nina
A rare Mixcloud link here. Nina hasn't done a mix in some time I don't think, bar her tapes (oh, her tapes!) so this is welcome. It's the typical dank we've come to expect from the Pudel resident/V I S founder, but as ever it's fascinating and rewarding, a "monolithic hypnosis" as the mix series describes it. You can download it too, if streaming ain't your thing.
VA - Sweat Equity Vol. 3: Extreme Hits!
A big bunch of club bangers that you can download for free. You might recognise names like Ariel Zetina, who featured last week, or Softcoresoft. I also dig tracks from Drumloop, BKGD Audio and a hugely trancey number from Bae System (lol at that name). On top of all that, the label has collaborated with Savannah-based hot sauce company Greg's Famous to make a special EXTREME HITS bottle of hot sauce!!! Spicy!
Topdown Dialectic - A3
Topdown Dialectic!!! They released some tapes on Tailings and Aught some years back and have been largely quiet since. That said, who knows what involvement they may have had in the various other Aught releases. This is from a 12" coming on Peak Oil, and sounds COOL. It's that same murky weird atmospheric electronic sound, but it's much faster and is riven with a repeated blast of scuzzy sax. Exciting!!!
Bandshell - Local News
A last-minute addition from Bandshell, who dropped this selection of weirdo joints last night. Ambient fuzz, junglish clatter, trippy dance, ultra-slow sampled beats, it's all weird and it's an insight into his skewed and delightfully odd approach.
I've been very uninspired and underwhelmed this week so it's a miracle I made it to eight entries. Repeal the 8th. Vote yes. Please.
