Yes. I think this is compliant. I hope so. Please bear with me.
Sonja Tofik - I din famn, äntligen fri
Utterly sublime soothing music from Sonja Tofik and Mar-llena, from an album called Vilar i dina spår. "Taped melancholy synth melodies to gnawing pieces of malaise." Ugh! So beautifully put. This week I've been flitting between gorgeous pieces like this and 90s house bangers. Each providing a different but necessary form of comfort and relief.
Klein - cc
Can't believe it's more than two years since Klein first featured here (out to TTB). This new album dropped just yesterday, out of nowhere I think. I was listening to it last night with slightly dodgy wifi and one track kept cutting out — since it's called 'Stop' I thought that was the point. But no. Scratchy weirdness, beautiful spoken word, sampled vocals that may or may not be synths... A rich and varied work from an artist that shows us something new with each release.
PARAISOMIX001 - DJ Senior Vasquez 'Deep, garage and early tribal house from Portugal 1994-2000 Mix'
Here's something that provided some joy this week. DJ Senior Vasquez is a new project from Photonz, in which he pays tribute to what one might loosely term a 90s New York house aesthetic. With this mix he focuses on music from that period but from his own back yard. We all know Rui Da Silva, and indeed he features here alongside DJ Vibe as Underground Sound of Lisbon, but this mix shines a light on other compatriots that may not have as much recognition. It moves perfectly from bright sunny house to tougher, darker night-time fare. Thank you Marco!
Afrikan Sciences Live @ Issue Project Room
Bought this without hearing it cause there's no preview. Take it from me, it's worth a punt. It's spoopy, vibrant, raucous, melodic. Not going to waste any more words here, just recommend you check it out! Take a chance.
Jo Johnson - Live At Cafe Oto 2017
What a joy. Jo Johnson shared this set she performed in London last year and it made for the perfect start to the day the morning I heard it. Like Afrikan Sciences above, Johnson is a live performer whose reputation precedes her (I think? I live in a bubble of my own making) but in short it's a magnificent ambient set that is the perfect accompaniment to the imagined space travel in my head. Blade Runner meets DS9. Wish it was longer than 26 minutes, but play it twice in a row, layer it, baby you got a stew going!
Yialmelic Frequencies - Yililok
This is on Leaving so I don't know how widely circulated it might be already? See above comment re bubbles. Anyway it's fitting with the theme of gorgeous relief this week. Long, drifting segments in the 15/20-minute region, it's squelchy and almost punchy at times but always brilliant. I will never stop going in with the superlatives.
elin.piel - RUT godnattsessions - Del 1
More gorgeous ambient. More straightforwardly lovely than Yililok above, it's slightly maudlin and morose, pulling at your emotions. Really excited to find this artist, will be looking forward to every new upload.
Atamone - Papineau Ave
Sometimes you just need some dusty hip-hop beats. I wrote that before noticing the artist described his own MPC as dusty. It's full of sunny, breezy, funky beats, perfect for hot and musty days.
SertOne - Vesta EP
Finally, something a bit different. It's been a while since my man SertOne shared anything, so enjoy this. It's frantic jungle-meets-trap-meets-rave music, banging stuff that's full of samples that seem a teeny bit familiar, but used so well as to render them completely new. File under rapid jungle. Bleedin' rapih.
