Another week goes by. I hope you and your families are all safe.
FeLid - A New World
Murky, wobbly ambient worbles from Japan. Slightly unhinged but charming all the same, these sounds feel like a black-and-white VHS recording of a lava lamp converted to digital and stuck on YouTube as a bizarre kind of time capsule.
V/A - " L'EMBRASSE (AMSTERDAM ARCANE TAPE RECORDINGS 1987) " 2020 REF.E-M03
Bizarrely enough, this is a vinyl reissue of a tape compilation from 1987. That aside it's pretty good. Well, these three tracks on SC are good. I'm no expert on darkwave or coldwave or whatever this is called but it bangs in a jaggedly affected manner.
Sweater On Polo - Take this time
Four tracks of hazy, drifting house music, perfect for sunny days in your garden or on your balcony or on your bed if the first two aren't options. Then one last track that simply floats on a beatless bed of warmth.
π§«π¦ π¬MixbwΓ© - FATALITY!!!##@@@
Don't be put off by the artwork. This is a clompy and freaky digital blizzard of a track.
VA - "I Hope You Are Well During These Strange Times" (Fever AM)
Don't you just haaaate those emails with generic greetings? I'm guilty of sending them too. You can't not acknowledge it, but how do you make it read as sincere? Anyway Fever AM (run by Rhyw and Mor Elian) decided to play on that with this mini-comp to riff on that idea. 96 Back has a sick track that I can't even describe. Asmus Odsat has this super trance-techno-breaks hybrid. DJ Tess rolls with sounds I've never heard before. Bangers. Maybe now isn't the right time? I've been wrestling with that. I've always listened to "club" music more in headphones than on the floor so in a way the current moment hasn't really affected me in that sense; in fact, maybe people will start to appreciate that this music ISN'T just for late nights and festivals. Maybe now is precisely the right time.
samb_rules - cool game music mix for Jack (LYE on Dublin Digital Radio)
Sam used to run a label called videogamemusic, and here he's shown how apt that name was, with a mix of "cool game music" for the rather infamous Jack Brolly. I don't even know most of the games but it's a lovely mix.
FUJIβ|β|β|β|β|β|β|β|β|β|βTA - iki
How do you even go about pronouncing that name... I will immerse myself in this strange home-made pipe organ sludge rather than thinking about it too much. There's something incredibly mournful about the sounds on offer here. Simple, staid melodies that linger and waver, filling me with longing and indescribable ennui. Like a musical elegy for .... something that's just out of reach. Just on the tip of my tongue. Never quite accessible.
Ahu - Lightwaves (robe)
This is such an incredibly beautiful track. Simple, effective. Like mid-00s Holden.
Bea Brennan - Day, Time Variations
A beautiful release that aims to act as a sequence of moments throughout the day. Ahhh it's just lovely. Sometimes you need lovely.
Freak Caravan - Luysali "Maison Maison Maison"
This is a very weird and freaky mix and I LOVE it.
Emily A. Sprague - Hill, Flower, Fog
Lovely lovely synth music. Wholesome, nice, heart-warming. Like the Bea Brennan release above, I can't even say much about it (brain fog) but it is WELCOME.
SALIMATA - oogie (prod. JWords)
Okay so I clicked on this because I thought it might sample Nightmare Before Christmas. It doesn't, but it still bangs in its own way.
