I've got so many links open that didn't fit in I feel guilty. If only you could see! If only I could turn this into a job! Somehow I could just feed you music all day long! But alas that is impossible. So here's the truncated version of my weekly search, sad as that may be.
Palestinian Museum - Cited Silence with Muqata'a صمت مقتبس مع مقاطعة
This is quite striking. At times it's JUST NOISE, but then Muqata'a manages to turn it into bouncing and haunting melodic beats music. Apparently he uses vintage printing equipment in his process, which is pretty wild and quite impressive.
father of two - a tribute to Alex T (live at hot mass, 3/7/20)
Scene stalwart and genuine dude Alex T passed away earlier this year. Even in a year as mad as this it's been hard to wrap my head around it. Alex was due to play at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh, and father of two and his friend Jack stepped up and played in his stead. That was also the last time they were in the club before ... everything. father of two has shared the 3.5-hr set and it's a fitting tribute to Alex, filled start to finish with international beats, be it UKG new and old, the unmistakeable sound of Warrior Queen or the classic that is 'Swing My Way'.
Maria Chavez - EMPAC SESSIONS: 1, 2020
EMPAC is the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center in New York. Maria Chavez has released this two part thing, the first track being a haunting, glistening piece that's delicately arresting. The second track is longer, with scratched vocals and crackles coming together and giving way to nightmare loops, all forming a stilted yet fascinating piece that showcases her unique set of skills.
False Moniker - Screen Memory
One of those "you've listened so many times you need to buy it now" releases. This is on Strange Rules, a label run by cremation lily. There's only one track playable, and it's a really haunting mix of sludgy bass noise and medium-pitched whine. Unsettling yet irresistible.
jihoon - the ep of eps EP
This EP from Detroit comes on the One Spoke label: "a spoke on a wheel starts in the center and shoots out into infinite directions. we are one of many." A ncie way of looking at the world, artistically and generally. The five tracks here cover chunky, chuggy electro, breaks-heavy house with soaring guitar solos, drum-machine ecstasy and uptempo jungle-esque sounds.
Vanessa Daou - Sunday Afternoons [The Carry Nation Vesper Hymn Dub]
You may know Vanessa Daou from the 90s CLASSIC Surrender Yourself (and its 13-minute Ballroom mix by Danny Tenaglia). She's had a long career since but that's the only one that's stuck with me. Here is a new dub of her 1994 song 'Sunday Afternoons' frmo New York's The Carry Nation. It's tough.
Goldie - Redemption [Jon Dixon Ambient Mix]
Goldie has commissioned a slew of artists to remix his 2017 album The Journey Man, and this ambient remix from Jon Dixon has just been shared. It's sublime.
Axine M - energetic-placekeeping
A nice lil weird sploppy electronic number that has strange and unknowable melodies, a pspsps rhythm that sounds like someone's looking for their cat, and an air of confusion.
he11gir1 - HELLWXRLD - VOLUME III
This is super spoopy and weird! he11gir1 is another Michigan artist, I think, at least the Bandcamp page says Michigan. Their Twitter says Tokyo. What is a place. The music is deeply affecting drone sounds, with loads of identifiable Paulstretch, but not in a bad way. To my ears, at least. Welcome to hell where you are welcome to sell, but when them shells come you better return' em. All scars, we earn 'em, all cars, we learn 'em like the back of our hand, we watch for cops hoppin' out the back of vans.
Sonja Tofik - All Errors Are Mine
Sounds like someone's trying to break into an industrial freezer tbqh.
Daphnellc // Playfield >> mixtape #2 LC022
Just a bleedin' mixtape? I think it's all original stuff, stitched together into one long piece, or else it's a big live set, I don't know. It bangs and fizzes in all the right ways. The eerie whispers of sound at the start of side 2 are really getting to me.
Rose Bonica - Tears for the Tea Maker
Shout out to Rose, who's been doing some amazing stuff over the past few months/years, and yet this is her debut album. It's a mixture of house, techno, pop, dreamy sounds, all done with her particular voice (literally, she sings and speaks too). 'I'm Ready but They Don't Want Me' is particularly squalid and raucous, while 'Destitute' is somehow both shoegaze and rattling techno. 'Your Mother Never Taught You Manners' is a time capsule to 90s big beat and UK punk rock, it shouldn't make sense but it does. The title track is a poignant and wistful instrumental track that could fit perfectly into an Ibizan sunset mix, while the bonus track 'Tropical Tears' is simply ebullient, a joyful number that would make just as much sense on Smalltown Supersound as it does on Bonica's own label.
Twinkle3 - Minor Planets
This is an unexpected delight. A mixture of electronic noodles and virtuoso shakuhachi, it genuinely explores untold worlds. It's musically fascinating, with gorgeous melodies and immersive soundscapes. The delicate drift of 'Soma 2815' is a highlight, as is the squidgy discomfort of 'Hertzsprung 1693'. These are real names of planets by the way, not just random words and numbers. Not to seep too deeply into cliché, but it really is one for you to sit back and enjoy the ride.
Bandcloud - Orange Hexagon Son #2
Gonna keep plugging this one! Time is time, and I also did a radio show this week, so it's up to you really. Someone said I had a nice radio voice and they didn't know the music I was sharing, so I can't ask for anything more than that. Music from an galar dub, Itsit, ghost.slut, Disdained, Future Perfect and SPACEGH0ST.
