It's Halloween tomorrow! In the dankest of news, our pumpkins got soaked sitting outside on our doorstep and sadly we've had to dump them.
anu - BBC SHOWS/MIXES
London DJ anu has just finished a year as resident on BBC Asian Network, and here's the full archive of all her shows. On top of her own inspired selections, she's had guests such as Kindness, Nídia, Manuka Honey and Bake.
The North Sea - Remembering the Romance
Brad Rose recently resurfaced after some years away from the scene, and they've also resurrected The North Sea, a project that was previously retired in 2012. Recorded between June and August this year, it's perfect for this season, with its crunching electronics and tragic titles, including 'Never Believe In Anyone'. It's part grinding noise and part electroacoustic sound experiments. All killer
SnS Members Mix 014 - Yung Singh
What a delight. London DJ Yung Singh put together a mix of Punjabi Garage, a distinct scene that's been running since the 90s. The rhythms may seem familiar but the melodies and vocals are entirely Punjabi. The combination of sounds is fascinating and enlivening. Yung Singh is great on Twitter too, detailing musical ideas and exploits as well as sharing insights from his time as a doctor in training.
Chorchill - Lichthupe II
Chorchill has been pretty busy lately, and this album is only the latest. Released on Binaural Space, it's a beautiful collection of melodic synth jams. Swoonsome.
The Nation - A Black United Front (part 3) Ascension
The artwork for this shows an almost comical haunted house but the music isn't seasonal. It's a collection of "rare vinyl from the basement/vaults, cd and music material from the headquarters and recording studio of Nation." It bangs.
pantea - Things
What a lovely title. Coming from Iran, pantea is an Iranian artist who makes strange and exciting squelchy, noisy music. The tracks are called things like 'Combs', 'Keys' and 'Patu (blanket)' so one can guess that they provide the sonic source material. Who knows?
Taut + Tame - Hydron
Forthcoming on Beat Concern Records, this is a rough and ready head-nodder of a track.
Q-O2 - Future Perfect 2020
Future Perfect is a duo of Julia Dyck and Amanda Harvey and this is from a performance Q-O2 in Brussels. It's a combination of sound art and ad-inspired spoken word. Ironically recorded in early March, it asks the listener if they are experiencing feelings of social isolation. Ha. I'd love to hear more. Julia Dyck has an album coming with fellow Q-O2 artist Diana Duta on Crash Symbols next week.
Jermainesoul - Oneirism
Disintegration State follow their recent VFOS release with another delight, this time coming from Jermainesoul. Its title refers to the very real experience of daydreaming, a perfectly apt response to the seemingly unreal happenings this year. The music is suitably expansive and emotive, with yawning chasms of sound and utterly gorgeous synth melodies dancing overhead. At times harsh and snarling, at others maudlin and melancholy, even delving into dnb territory, it's a real trip in its five tracks.
Red pig flower_Atmosphere of dead planet
Wowee, this is a short and beautiful piece of ambient. Crisp, dark. Ominous.
VA - For Nora
Earlier this year, Irish artist Kobina's young niece was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour, and wanting to celebrate her through music. He assembled this compilation with tracks from artists like Moving Still, Lighght, SertOne, Minos, Fears and Murli to name a few. It's raising money for Aoibheann's Pink Tie, an Irish charity that offers practical support to the families of children diagnosed with cancer.
Perila - META DOOR L
Perila has been putting out stunning mixes and sounds over the past two years, and even in the past fortnight she dropped a tape for Boomkat's Documenting Sound series. Now she's got another tape on Paralaxe Editions, who have previously released music from Ondness, Beatrice Dillon and Rupert Clervaux and ELLLL. Continuing a theme of the week, it's a thing of electroacoustic beauty, with crisp and lumpy sound meeting wistful beds of sound. It's inspired by open spaces "and the objects that interrupt them" and I feel like the title matches that, with the word metal forcefully broken by the word door.
Cahn Ingold Prelog - Accelerate
Cahn Ingold Prelog is Simon Proffitt, who's also recorded as The Master Musicians of Dyffryn Moor among other names. I love his totally unique approach to sound, and this release for Crow Versus Crow carries on a theme of singular sound exploration. Once more this week we have mundane track titles that belie a fascinating practice: 'Unsuccessful Search For A Council Tax Bill', 'Central Heating Song'', 'Fruitless Hunt For Clean Fork', 'Desperately Seeking Dishwasher Tablets'. These sounds were recorded using a piezoelectric accelerometer and a custom amp, these sounds were magnified and amplified, creating fascinating worlds of noise entirely beyond their origins. Bravo.
Slime Mask - Halloween
I literally searched Halloween on SoundCloud. I found a whole load of turgid trap beats and this one ambient set from Slime Mask, based in Hell, United States (a tautology?). "Live sampler jams, tape recordings, forgotten ableton files. You know sort of like ghosts or something." Brilliant,
BRUJAS - 2
New on HELLWXRLD, this is alternately dank and hopeful. Light and shadow.
