HI! Tristan Bath of Spool's Out, The Quietus & DiS here. I've recently escaped the black hole of life in my native London - where time and space themselves get sucked into the ether - for the cheap and easy life in Vienna, Austria.
Finally! Time enough to scour the millions of cassette tapes, bandcamp links, and soundcloud accounts out there!... well sort of. Though still barely making a dent in my own inbox let alone the vastness of what is out there, here's some of my latest internet loves.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Susso - Keira EP
Absolutely blindingly good EP of music pieced together by London-based bassist/composer/etc Huw Bennett. Bennett snips up samples made during a trip to the Gambia back in 2013, mostly featuring musicians from the Mandinka people, and reconfigures the pieces into beautiful/groovy productions. A highlight of the year for me.
Kapital - Chaos to Chaos
Anybody out of the loop needs to dig in to everything relating to this Polish duo immediately. Rafał Iwański has been making ritualistic metallic noises for years with HATI and his solo outlet X-Navi:Et, while Jakub "Kuba" Ziołek needs little introduction after his work as Stara Rzeka. Both also play in Ensemble. Kapital carries the strengths of all the pair's other work - expansive arrays of alien sounds alongside pretty guitars and keys, free-flowing structures, and impeccably realised atmospherics - only this time contained within 8 brief(ish - 7:40 tops, which is brief for this sort of thing) succinct tunes. Get on it.
Makaya McCraven - In the Moment Remix Tape
Chicagoan drummer edited down 48 hours of live improvised funky jazz into his In the Moment double LP put out in January, has had mates and producers re-remix that, and then re-re-remixed that into this mix tape. Look, basically this is filled with amazing beats and vibraphone grooves from McCraven and co, and if you like J Dilla and Boards of Canada you'll love it.
Save Detroit - Live 2002
"Long lost performance discovered on an old hard drive." Bit sad that an outfit called 'Save Detroit' was operating back in 2002 (perhaps the name's a new one?), but in any case, this hour long set of improvised techno is a dizzying display. Truly engrossing.
Dekmantel Podcast 035 - Autechre
A four hour 'influences mix' from Autechre. HOW COULD THIS NOT BE ON MY LIST?? "...nods to forefathers like Kraftwerk, killer cuts from Man Parrish, classics from Newcleus and retro gold from the likes of The Beat Club" WHY ARE'NT YOU LISTENING TO IT YET?
M/M - videogamemusicmixone
First in a hopefully very long series of mixes put out by the wonderful videogamemusic. Debut edition by M/M is super weeeird and eeeeeerie, playing out like a broken Nurse with Wound montage... or something. Noises heard include church organs and choirs, radio static, backwards stuff, and distant reggae.
Kib Electra - Blemishes EP
Know next to nothing about this other than I love it. Female vocal-led experimental pop, which goes heavy on voice manipulation and deliciously chunky drum machine beats, scattering all over the floor like an opened bag of marbles. Should get picked up and made massive immediately. Though it's clearly not a bloody cake or something, I'd still describe this as 'exquisite'.
DJ Fine & Tissu - MIX FOR COMING DOWN S01E02
Does exactly what is says on the tin, and caresses you in a warm glow of light for 70 glorious minutes that veer from meditative shapelessness to AM disco and back again. Both DJ Fine and Tissu hail from Switzerland.
Dodmen - Jasper
Yeah this is my band - we improvise and I play guitar. So what? We've gotta start plugging it somewhere...
