Something something Paddy not Patty. Except I don't really all that much. Hello! It's been a mad week for me, building work and a lot of writing has meant less time with music. But then I thought this would be a shorter mail, and that hasn't turned out to be the case. Enjoy the following.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Veiled - Museu Secret
This is S&M dungeon music, apparently. Gritty technoid electro noise, sleazy and filthy.
Charles Barabé - Empreintes
This is on a Canadian label called Jeunesse Cosmique. It's a two-track tape that blends thudding, distorted percussion with eery strings and meaningful titles. Barabé'sConfessions features tracks recorded between 2002 and 2013. Both interesting releases.
Metatag - Transmission
Never judge a Bandcamp release by its .jpg, yeah yeah, but this one caught my eye because its artwork looks like that for Music For 18 Musicians. It's no classic, but it's a nice piece of work. An hour of short vignettes recorded through sequencers and live playing. "No seagulls were harmed during the making of this album," they assure us.
Ajilvsga - Massacre Canyon
This is a mammoth release right here. Brad Rose (yes, him again) and Nathan Young are Ajilvsga. Massacre Canyon is a collection of 12 tracks, 10 featured previously on different labels, two unreleased. This collection appeared in 2011, but it dropped into my life last weekend via Jack Murphy. Jack sends me so much music, new and old, it's hard to keep up. Thank you Jack. Anyway, this is doom-laden drone related to one of the last battles between the Pawnee and the Sioux, or at least I'm inferring as much from the collection's title, and the track titles themselves. Most of the tracks are 15 minutes plus, so it's a lot to take in. It's great stuff though.
Marie Davidson - Marie Davidson
This is a pretty cool release, sort of new-wave horror film organs and drone and woozy French singing from Montreal native Marie Davidson. I think she has an album due out this year, that should be interesting. She's playing SXSW tonight if you're in the area.
Sun Hammer - |
This is a three-track release of short experiments in sound, with a remix by Guy Birkin, who featured here previously with his Tintinnabuli Mathematica release.
Voices From The Lake - Velo Di Maya EP
Solemn, muted techno as well as more stirring numbers. VFTL also appeared on Beats in Space this week, with an hour and a half of ambient wonder. Essential listening.

Indira Paganotto - March 2014 Mix
Indira Paganotto just put out the Time Out Man EP on Ian Pooley's label. This is a solid mix of proper house music, if you'll let me call it that.
black lines mix.tape
This is a pretty short mix.tape if you ask me. It's still good though. Weird trippy mournful darkness. They have a Bandcamp page too, though it hasn't been updated since last year.
Dummy Mix 202 // Giganta
Giganta is the latest signing to Werkdiscs. Her mix for Dummy blends scuzzy house sounds with retro-leaning electro throwbacks. One of those is one of those Buz Ludzha tracks I raved about a few weeks back. The way she brings it in is just delightful.
Submerse - sleep.mix.
My man Joe put me on to this, its title says it all. Ethereal ambience, film score opulence (including that epic closing music from Inception), it's rather beautiful.
Christina Vantzou - No 1
I've got to thank Joe for this one too. Neoclassical ambient in the Julia Holter mould. Gorgeous.
Falty DL - Hip Love
Everyone went mad for the Jamie xx mix of this a few years ago, but I always preferred the original. Adeeva AND Alena sampled in the same track, ooh child. He's just upped it, so let's enjoy us again.
PRINCÍPIO DA INCERTEZA #209 - March 9th 2014 - ZNTN (How The Other Half Lives) guest mix
Princípio da Incerteza is a weekly radio show hosted by Marco from Photonz, recorded in London but broadcast on Lisbon's Rádio Oxigénio. This mix comes from Goncalo Pereira, aka ZNTN. I love how the genre tag is "Good". Deep house and techno.
Bohemian Groove - A Musical Drama EP
Jokers of The Scene teamed up with Renaissance Man last year for the first Bohemian Groove release (one of the tracks was remixed by Photonz, to go full circle). This release is a lot harder, but no less engaging. The Hieroglyphic Being remix is a beast.
Liminal Sounds Vol.36: Spare
This dude has a release coming out on Coyote next month, last week he did a mix for Liminal Sounds. It's a dope mix first and foremost, but I'm sharing it if only because of the way he lays 'XE2 VIP / Part 2' over 'Oi Dirty'. Nice work man.

Have fun this weekend, don't get too drunk, and remember the true meaning of St Patrick's Day - that snakes are evil.
All the best,
Aidan
