Insert witty intro. Sometimes I feel I should just skip straight to the music.
Shinra - Ball + Chain EP
The first release on null+void Recordings is a thrilling ride through space-age acid electro. Operatic melodies run wild while snarling bass lines face off against thunderous laser drops. There's also a crazily fast remix from Scrase to take things even further.
Uxuka - Etna
This two-track release combines so many elements that remind me of bits and pieces of things I love. Eno-esque choral strains, muted yet guttural trance-like synth melodies, hazy washes that feel like saturated mist. Just wanna curl up with it and smile.
Cong Burn Waves - Cong Burn Tapes 01
This hour-long tape is made up of.... "Voice, drums, bongo, calve, guitar, modular synthesizer, casio keyboard, electronics, drum machines, Max/MSP, echo, loops, bass guitar, effect pedals, spring reverb." It's a series of jams put together by a bunch of like-minded friends, traversing dark passages and interesting corridors. Tristan Bath featured a segment on this week's Spool's Out Radio, right before a Broshuda megamix.
Lykanthea - Migration
Just discovered this release from last year by Chicago-based Lykanthea. It's got beautifully emotive ambient textures and just-right vocals that could veer towards overly ethereal. Like Tropic of Cancer but less dark. Floaty goodness.
Simic - Glass Eye
You might recognise Simic from his driving techno released on Major Problems earlier this year, but this is a thoroughly beguiling slice of beatless, arpeggiated synth beauty.
Yamaneko - NTS Radio 23rd November 2015
I texted Yamaneko mid-set (sorry about that) because he was playing something unmistakeably familiar but that I could not recognise. Hilariously (!), it was something I had recommended to him some time back. I even featured it in my Naptunes mix. That aside, this mix is gorgeous, featuring wonderful Talbot Fade wobbling sadness, eastern jams, unreleased T_A_M, some Trentemøller, dark video-game music and more.
Yoko Higashi - Recording of Butoh dance& music solo performance rehearsal,2
I've found myself falling down a wonderful rabbit hole of dank noise by letting SoundCloud continue through the related tracks that follow this piece. As the title suggests, it's an extract from a rehearsal of the Japanese dance style Butoh somewhere in France, composed and performed by Yoko Higashi. There's some dark clanking followed by swirling sonic trippery. I will be keeping an eye on her work henceforth.
Daniel Lanois - Iceland (pan•american remix)
Pan•American featured on the wonderful Geographic North label before, so that's why I'm inclined to include their remix of Lanois over one by M. Geddes Gengras (which is also really good!). I feel I use the term "expansive wonder" a lot but it really seems fitting here. OST vibes.
Egyptian Eyeliner - Drama of Exile (käfTen007 a2)
Just some lush electronic melodrama, classic percussion and woozy background chords. Found it via the Dankbasementvibes Facebook page, which isn't all that dank I think.
Juju & Jordash (Live) - As You Like It Halloween Bash 10/31/15
JJ&J were playing a Halloween gig and wanted to keep it spooky, but half-way through they forgot. No bother. A joy from start to finish.
Raica - Live @ Action Potential : Opening set for Kangding Ray
Live set from Raica, in support of Kangding Ray in Seattle a few weeks back. Heavier than I might have expected, but maybe that's cause I'm mentally focused on her Mysteries of The Deep mix. Really interesting and exciting though.
Hope you're keeping well. Do let me know! Always here for a chat.
